On 19 March 2013 the Rector approved the Language Strategy which provides a guideline for the use of languages in research, teaching, administration and communications at the University of Tampere. It rests on the University Strategy and Intenationalisation Strategy.
According to the Language Strategy the language of instruction and degrees at the University of Tampere is Finnish and in foreign language degree programmes usually English.
The University fosters international publication by offering researchers courses on academic writing, public speaking and interaction skills in English. In addition, Language Services provides translation and editing services for a fee to meet the needs of the schools, institutes and other units.
Doctoral dissertations can be published in Finnish or Swedish and also in other languages. The University encourages researchers and doctoral students to publish also in other languages than English.
The University encourages students to include an internationalisation module (minimum 20 ECTS) into their degrees. Such a module could, for example, consist of student exchange programmes and/or courses or modules taken in languages other than Finnish. The aim is to enable students enrolled in degree programmes conducted in the Finnish language to access scientific reference works in languages other than Finnish in their studies.
The University’s language of administration is Finnish. However, increasing internationalisation at the University affects the University’s administration, support and service functions and internal and external communications making especially proficiency and competence in English communication ever more important.
