Fulbright Center and the University of Tampere have established a new scholarship program. The person granted the Fulbright – University of Tampere Scholar Award conducts research and lectures at the University of Tampere. One grant period lasts for 3—9 months.
The candidates for the award should hold PhD degrees and be US citizens. The Award Program is open to representatives of all fields of science, but priority is given to candidates who conduct research and lecture on society and health. The University of Tampere and Fulbright Center finance the Award together. The Award Program covers the grantee’s monthly allowance, housing and travel expenses, accident and sickness insurance and the support services offered by the Fulbright Center. The grantee is also offered the chance to attend a summer course with introductions to Finnish culture and society.
The Executive Director of Fulbright Center, Terhi Mölsä, signed the agreement in Tampere on Thursday 14 March. The multidisciplinary North American Studies Program at the University of Tampere and Fulbright Center also organized the America in Living Color seminar on 14-15 March where the American grantees living in Finland talked about their research. Vice-Rector Pertti Haapala and Executive Director Terhi Mölsä opened the seminar.
Pertti Haapala, Vice-Rector in charge of research at the University of Tampere, said that the new Awards Program is a significant step forward:
“The University of Tampere has a long history of Fulbright programs. For us they have been the most important avenue when we have built research cooperation in the United States, the world leader in science. Therefore the new Award Program is an eagerly anticipated and welcome thing.”
Fulbright Center is an organization that specializes in academic exchange between Finland and North America. Finland and the United States signed the Fulbright agreement in 1952 after which over 1,500 American grantees have already stayed in Finland.
