Tekes report praises BioMediTech and Biomaterials Research in Tampere

Tekes has published a report on Finnish innovations. The units of the two universities in Tampere participating in BioMediTech research receive favourable mention as key actors in the Finnish medical biomaterial sector.

Recent decades have seen the formation of an important cluster in the biomaterial field in Tampere. The report emphasizes the considerable impact of Tampere University of Technology (TUT) on the development of the biomaterials field in Finland. The report makes several references to the spin-off companies resulting from work accomplished at TUT, such as Bioretec and Scaffdex.

The SfinPact report compiled by VTT and TEKES outlines the history of Finnish innovation achievements and policies. The report is based on the Sfinno database containing approximately 5,000 Finnish innovations.

The report examines the various roles played by Tekes in Finnish research and in developing processes and also describes the development and innovations of seven thematic areas.

According to the report, TEKES through its funding programmes has contributed significantly to the development of biomaterials in Finland and in Tampere. Biotechnology is a TEKES focal area.

The report presents success stories of novel significant innovations whose commercialization prospects are considered to be good.

The Human Spare Parts programme at BioMediTech is highlighted as one of the promising projects in the field of cell and tissue research. The project is carried out in collaboration with Tampere University of Technology and the University of Tampere, and is expected to create new business opportunities in several fields, such as imaging and biomaterials.

In international financial collaboration special mention is made of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at TUT, which collaborates with BioMediTech. In collaboration with Japanese researchers, the Department is carrying out a research project intended to develop technology and materials to prevent blindness.
