Research training at the University of Tampere starts from basic studies as an undergraduate, continues through graduate school and extends to the post-doctoral research career. The interplay between research and teaching is well acknowledged in Tampere - high-quality research is based on good training and an appreciation of a research oriented approach.
Graduate schools are entities for graduate training in various diciplines of science. The University of Tampere currently coordinates 12 such national graduate schools.
In joint doctoral studies the idea is to support the success of doctoral candidates as experts both in universities and research institutes and elsewhere in working life - either in the private or public sector. Of the study options offered, postgraduates can select courses which will equip them with different kinds of research skills or working life skills.
The joint doctoral studies of the University of Tampere have been initiated and the first courses were offered during the study term 2007-2008. The coordination and organization of the joint doctoral studies is one of the duties of the Institute for Social Research (ISR).
