The University of Tampere has had some gowns made for use at the public defence of a doctoral dissertation. They were designed by Päikki Priha.
They
comprise the same basic model for all, a simple garment in black wool
muslin. There are detachable collars in woven linen. These are
available in three colours: yellow for the author of the dissertation,
blue for the opponent and grey for the president or custos. There is a
gilded University badge on the right front corner of the collar.
Those using these gowns should be aware that both the shoes and the
collar of their own shirt or blouse will be visible, thus the shirt or
blouse should be white or black and the shoes black.
The garments are the same for all faculties.
There are separate sizes for men (medium, large, extra large and
extra-extra large), and for women (small, medium and large). Collars
are available in all colours, small, medium and large.
Reservations for gowns should be made through Ms Marja-Liisa Kuokkanen, tel. 3551 6685. They may be viewed and tried on in advance in the administrative section, Main Building.
