My Movie Memories

My first visit to a real cinema was at the ripe age of 11. That is incredibly old in this period of information overload, with all the Pokemons, Digimons and other films directed at the children and youth. It has been twenty five years, so I have forgotten everything about the film, but I can still remember the way I felt that day.

Right from the morning the school day felt exciting, as all the pupils in our little village school were loaded on a bus and taken to the only movie theatre of the country borough. That matinee was attended by all the other local elementary schools as well, so it really felt like a big event. To a small village school child the girls and boys from the town schools with hundreds of pupils seemed to be from another world. This excitement and astonishment is what I remember of that day, as well as the hundreds of chairs of the historic theatre, how absolutely had to be in time to get the soft back row seats. The movie itself was unimportant, even though there was a quiz on it the next day. It was an educational film you see, history or religion.

My second film I do remember. I was much more experienced, already 13 years old so I had advanced to a school in the town. Again I went because of school, the teacher of Finnish and Literature took all of the classes to see Ten Little Niggers, which is based on a novel by Agatha Christie. The order was clearly set; first we had to read the book, then we went to see the film, on which we had to write an essay. There was a special excitement in the air this time as well, but more typically for my age I concentrated on what was essential: where was HE sitting...snicker snicker. I have seen and read Agatha Christie's stories many times after that, but those have never been as memorable occasions as my first acquaintance with her production.
