Movie Memories

Too Young to go

The first movie that comes to my mind from my childhood was the Disney cartoon Rescuers. I wanted to go and see it, but I couldn't.

When The Rescuers was on I was only six, but the age limit was seven. So like a good little girl I stayed home when my mother and my older brother went to see the film. The thought of worming myself along with them never crossed my mind. I firmly believed that rules should not be broken.

The Rescuers is an animation of two mice, Bernard and Bianca, who set off to rescue Penny, an orphan girl who has been snatched by the evil Madame Medusa and her accomplices. The action takes place on an abandoned riverboat on a marshy swamp. If I could have gone I would have seen wicked deeds by Madam Medusa and her pet crocodiles, a diamond hunt, mouse romance and a heartbreaking story of a little orphan. Finally the bad guys would lose and Penny would find a new home.

The Rescuers is clear on my mind as if I had seen it. I received an audio tape with the story and the songs from the film later on. I also collected The Rescuers stickers, which were inside packs of bubble gum. I ate a lot of bubble gum so I could collect the stickers and put them in my album. This is how I made the film come to life for me.

Once in a while I fondly remember this film, and I still haven't seen it. I wonder where I could get it?
