Movie Memories
Los Angeles May 1992
"In LA they treat you like a King”, says a T-shirt with a picture of policemen beating up Rodney King. The night curfew has been lifted the day before.
It's almost deserted outside the famous Mann Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. There's only a few people examining the handprints of the stars at this popular tourist spot.
Despite that the movie theatre itself is almost full. About three quarters of the audience is African American. It's a premiere of some mediocre action film. Before the movie they show a trailer of Spike Lee's new film Malcolm X.
The reaction of the crowd is spontaneous. They burst into applause. This is how they collectively comment on what has happened in the city during the last few days. There seems to be no end to the clapping.
After that the movie seems false.
