Movie Memories
A Good Story is the Most Important Thing
I can call myself a movie addict with good reason. My fascination with the moving pictures began when I was very young, and later on I worked in a video rental store and I could have the films for free. I spent a lot of nights watching films.
When you watch a lot of movies there is at least one drawback. I have gotten a lot pickier with movies, so I encounter movies that I think are good less often. I have so many memories on movies that I find it too difficult to pick one and tell about it. So I will just present two movies I remember especially well.
For me the most important things in a movie are a good plot and that it's visually impressive. These two memorable movies have brilliantly combined a good plot with the proper mood.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994) is a touching and realistic drama on prison life, loosely based on a novel by Stephen King. In the beginning of the movie I was fascinated by the beautifully realistic depiction of life in prison, towards the end the surprising and ingenious twists of the plot. But really the movie is about friendship.
The Usual Suspects (1995) is a psychological thriller that excellently combines collage of narration to an inventive plot and sophisticated acting. The movie received two Oscars, one went to the actor Kevin Spacey, one to the writer Christopher McQuarrie. The Usual Suspects keeps the viewer tightly in its grip until the very end. Nothing is clear until the film is over - if even then.
