A Familiar War

I grew up in a small village in the countryside. My sisters had already seen the Unknown Soldier before, so I had to go to the cinema alone. I pedalled seven kilometres to the village excited about seeing the popular depiction of Finland in the Second World War.

The experience really was memorable. The war and the bombings sucked me into the movie. I was so scared that I shivered. People in the audience were crying. One of them fainted out of excitement. Many people were too shaken to watch the whole film through.

When it was time to go home it was already dark. I was chased by the sound of bombs and grenades as I cycled home. I rode faster and faster until I finally saw the comforting lights of home.
