Movie Memories
When Grandpa Took the Family to the Pictures
People had been talking about a fine, world famous film being shown at the local cinema. It was made by some famous American man and was very popular everywhere.
After a bit of convincing Ida got her husband Ilmari to say yes. Instead of the plays at the Youth Society and the recitations of guests from the capital the family would for once get a cosmopolitan cultural experience. They would all go to the movies.
And so they did one winter evening, the parents and their flock of children. Half of them in the car, the other half in the horse sleigh. One or two of the neighbours' children as well, I think.
Once they got there it took some time for Ida to get her flock to quiet down. Ilmari, a stern farmer, Ida and the children anxiously waited for the film to begin. Finally they saw the title on the screen: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The film kept rolling.
"Well I'll be damned. It's a cartoon!”
Imagine the embarrassment to Ida and the frustration of Ilmari. But the children had fun as they watched with shining eyes what Snow White and the Dwarfs were doing. The story was too exciting for Ilmari, who went outside several times to take a breath of fresh air and pat the horse.
