Main Prize Twice for Finland, But Five Times for a Finn A movie representing Finland has won the International Competition twice in the Tampere Film Festival. In 1971 the Grand Prix went to Rantojen miehet directed by Hannu Peltomaa, and the last year's winner was Hyppäääjä by PV Lehtinen. Both films will be shown this year at the Tampere Film Festival.
The Grand Prix has been carried off three other times by a Finn, the winning movie, however, having been shot and produced outside Finland. In 1982, Johan Donner and the movie En stad under huden represented Sweden. The 1985 winner was the United Kingdom with Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen's film Byker. Also representing the United Kingdom was Many Happy Returns, the Grand Prix winner of 1997 by Marjut Rimminen.
Movies About Life Hannu Peltomaa's Rantojen miehet that gained Finland its first Grand Prix is a documentary about meths drinkers based on interviews. Through the stories, the film sketches a picture of men and women who live outside the norms of society. Hyppääjä by PV Lehtinen is the only movie to win all the notable prizes in the history of the Tampere Film Festival. The film was awarded the Grand Prix, the main prize of the National Competition and the Risto Jarva Prize. The Finnish Junior Jury also valued Hyppääjä highly, selecting it as the best movie. Hyppääjä is a story from the world of diving. It views a sunny summer day through the eyes of the central character, Helge Wasenius, a well-known diver and stunt diver born in 1927. Johan Donner, the Finnish director of the award-winning Swedish film En stad under huden, is still working with movies in Sweden. The Finnish filmmaker Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen moved to England in 1969 and worked there for 23 years before returning to Finland Byker, the succesful representative of the United Kingdom, tells about her own experiences and adaptation to the English community. Konttinen has also published a photography book titled Byker (Dufour Editions, 1998). Marjut Rimminen, a renowned animator, has lived in England since 1974. Rimminen's Many Happy Returns, the Grand Prix winner of the United Kingdom, is an animated psychodrama depicting a grown woman's painful memories and the effects they have. The movie has a slight autobiographical touch. Besides winning success in several different film festivals, Rimminen has also been awarded prizes for directing and animating commercials. Rantojen miehet & Hyppääjä at Kinopalatsi Cinema on Friday 8th at 3 pm.
