Film Guerillas Free Indonesian Film - We are Indonesian film. We must do it right now, declares Lulu Ratna happily. But she will not take all credit to herself. She and many other filmmakers have decided to make independent and good films in their own country. Director Aryo Danusiri arrived to Tampere with Lulu Ratna. His films depict life of different minorities at the remote districts of Indonesia. - At this time, films are just waiting to be made. If we don't do them, somebody else will. Free films Lulu Ratna represents new Indonesian film at Tampere. She and the community she represents, the Indonesian Independent Film Community, KONFIDEN, have organized a short film festival in Jakarta for the past two years. - Now we have the possibilities to make films just as we want them, she rejoices. Aryo Danusiri says that there were practically no Indonesian films before the turn of the millennium. There were films that had passed censorship and films that were produced by government propaganda and therefore officially licensed. There was no mention of entertaining films that would have drawn large audiences. When filmmaking became freer, a number of art films nobody saw were produced. - Now we want to make free films which are of good quality and which the audience wants to see. Now we have the possibilities to do them, Aryo Danusiri says. - Hopefully, this is a sign that we can make successful films on our own. These new films aren't built only on film stars. They have a new form and a good story that the ordinary viewers feel is close to them, Aryo Danusiri says. Film communities The filmmakers of the new, free world call themselves “guerrilla filmmakers”. After the censorship rule of the military junta, film was so important as an art form that the filmmakers gathered into communities of independent film. A “here we come and we film with our bare hands if necessary” attitude lives in the communities. - Films still concentrate on the Javan island but they aren't so Jakarta-centered anymore. There are film communities in other cities as well, Lulu Ratna says. Films of Aryo Danusiri are screened at the Film Festival on 6 and 8 March. Films of KONFIDEN are screened on the 9th. Other Indonesian films are Kuldesak on 5 and 10 March, works from the Indonesian Film School on 7 and 8 March and films by Joris Ivens on the 10th.
