Wells a First-Time Judge of Micromovies
Jonathan Wells is one of the founders of RES Media Group and is in charge of its programmes. In 2002 he is also one of the judges in the Micromovies competition at the Tampere Film Festival. We found him at the press conference of the Film Festival, holding a palmtop.
Have you previously judged Micromovies in a competition?
– I have never been a member of a Micromovies competition jury. However, this seems to be the first time when a major film festival has a series for micromovies. Sundance Film Festival has had some micromovies in its programme, but not many.
What do you think are the most important or interesting traits of a micromovie?
– This is an entirely new way to experience film. Previously films have been watched on screen or on video. Now you can watch them with PDA equipment. I can watch these micromovies on my palmtop when I sit in a bus or even when I walk on the street. Nevertheless, short films are at their best when watched on screen. Yet, it is better to see them on a palmtop than not to see them at all.
Have you made films yourself?
– I have filmed a few short films years ago. They were part of the Resfest event which I helped to found. After Resfest got bigger I haven't had time to make short films. Nowadays Resfest travels around the world. We do have a few screenings here at Tampere as well. In addition, we publish the film magazine RES Magazine. Of course, I constantly meet with filmmakers. I hope that some day I can make films myself.
What is the future of micromovies like?
- Technology changes rapidly. The border between television and the internet will be even more fuzzy. Films can be viewed on television and on the internet. This presents a challenge for short film makers. They will most likely make good micromovies as well. It will be interesting to see what kind of new contents they will produce in order to distinguish themselves from the abundant offering.
