The 36 th Tampere Film Festival was officially opened on Wednesday. The opening ceremony offered some samples of the festival programme. In his opening speech, the festival director Jukka-Pekka Laakso said that one of the main aims of the Film Festival is to give the floor to those who normally cannot make themselves heard on the screen. As one of this year's themes, Laakso especially emphasized the effort to understand other people's ideas.

Giant robot gives the city a voice

Next Thursday, an interesting combination of old film and new music will take over the Old Customs House Tullikamari. The Helsinki based band, Giant Robot, will accompany the film Sao Paulo - the Symphony of the Metropolis, a Brazilian silent film from 1929. Giant Robot is a versatile band that published its first EP in 1997.

Pupils´ short films concentrate on consumption

A phone with a camera taped to it: a truly clever advertising gimmick? This is the theme of a short film partly created by Juhani Myllymäki. It is a parody of how brainless products are given an appearance that is attractive to consumers. Sitting next to him is Kaisa Konttinen. She and her team made a short film focusing on the myth of slimness: a teenage boy won't get bullied at school and he'll be popular with the girls, if he buys a gym pass.
