Silent Films Are Not Totally Silent |
"What did you hear?", asks Estonian composer Sven Grünberg after a silent film of a festive parade. It becomes evident that we can never be totally without sounds. A viewer can always imagine the sounds to a silent film in his or her mind. Also, in a silent theater all the little noises take more emphasis, so a silent film can never be seen in a total silence. Grünberg has composed music for over 80 films, some of which were very popular in the former Soviet Union. The composer is giving lectures on film music at the Tampere Institute of Art and Communication (Tampereen Taiteen ja viestinnän oppilaitos) on 4.-6. March.

Grünberg also conducts the students who will play live accompaniment to silent films on Friday and Saturday. In these sessions, the students are concentrating merely on creating "sound visions" rather than playing music.Music sets the toneGrünberg has a strong belief in the power of music: it can turn a tragedy into a comedy, and vice versa. For example, in Chaplin's City Lights it is the music themes that conveys all the vagabond's feelings, from messing around to falling in love.Grünberg and TTVO students accompany silent films at Pakkahuone, in Tullikamari on Friday at 4 pm. and on Saturday at 6 pm.
