Marja Jylhä is the Professor of Gerontology at the School of Health Sciences, University of Tampere, and Director of the Gerontology Research Center (GEREC), a collaboration between the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Tampere. For several years, she has been the Director of the national Doctoral Programs in Public Health (DPPH), a network of four universities and three other research institutes. Currently, she is member of the scientific advisory board of the Joint Programming Initiative “More Years, Better Lives”.  Earlier, she has been the Vice-Rector of the U Tampere for seven years and the Director of two national research programs on aging, funded by the Academy of Finland. She has served as chair of the steering committee of ERA-AGE and as chair of the scientific advisory board of the FUTURAGE, a project funded by the European Commission that produced a roadmap for European aging research until 2025

 

She teaches courses at graduate and doctoral level on different themes related to aging, and on theories and methodologies in health sciences.

 

Dr. Jylhä's major research interests include self-rated health, functioning, and mortality of older populations; longevity; social determinants of health; aging and health as social and cultural constructs; and social and health services.  Her projects include Vitality 90+ (in Finnish: Tervaskannot 90+,, The longevity revolution – implications for the need and costs of health and social services (COCTEL), funded by the Academy of Finland,  and the Tampere Longitudinal Study on Aging (TamELSA). She is involved with the NordForsk-funded project Social inequality in ageing, coordinated by the Karolinska Institute, and the European Network on Quality and Cost-Effectiveness in LTC and Dependency Prevention, coordinated by the London School of Economy.

 

 Marja Jylhä was the President of the 23rd Nordic Congress of Gerontology which was held in Tampere in June 2016 and currently she is President of the Nordic Gerontological Federation (Nordisk  Gerontologisk Förening – NGF).

 

The gerontology group at the School of Health Sciences applies both epidemiological and qualitative methods and aims to promote interdisciplinary approaches in aging research.
