Her main research and expertise areas concern family research: families with children, families as clients in health care and families in challenging life situations. Since 1994, her largest research projects concern family violence: child maltreatment, and family risks, especially from intervention and outcome research perspective. Family Violence Research Group has 17 members, both post doctoral, doctoral and masters level researchers, doing research on different perspectives e.g. intimate partner violence, children and adolescents experiencing family violence, disabled children and violence, violent women, multiprofessional practices dealing with family violence, and public health nursing practices dealing with family violence.

Research projects are or have been funded e.g. by Academy of Finland (2006 – 2008), Boards of Hospital Districts, and National Institute of Health and Welfare (140/THL/TE/2011-2013). The latest research deals with "Risk assessment tool application, supportive intervention and multiprofessional training program concerning child maltreatment" (201610044), for 2016-2018, funded by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Finland. Another research project deals with development and testing of child protection criteria (2017-2018). Research projects concerning costs of violence (2019 -) and child and family services development in Japan and Finland (OH/Asia Program: 2018-2020) have just started.

During August 1st 2011 – July 31st 2012 Professor Paavilainen worked at the Research Collegium, Institute for Advanced Social Research (IASR) in University of Tampere. During that period she started research on two sites in Finland, in maternity and child welfare clinics, on evaluating and testing interventions which are effective in increasing families’ welfare and functioning and decreasing families’ risk situations. She also made a national survey for public health nurses concerning identifying and intervening in child maltreatment, in 2012. The survey was based on the National Guideline, published in 2008 by Family Violence Research Group and Nursing Research Foundation. The same survey data has been collected also in Japan, in 2012. The Guideline has been updated in 2015.

Professor Paavilainen also has a research position in the South Ostrobothnia Hospital District (Etelä-Pohjanmaan sairaanhoitopiiri) from 2002. Research topics there are e.g. family centered councelling, identifying and intervening in family violence cases in health care settings, child maltreatment risk assessment, and evaluating effective interventions concerning those.
