HOW TO BECOME A DOCTORAL STUDENT

Changes in application procedure from 1 August 2012

The regulations concerning postgraduate studies at the School of Health Sciences have been changed. From now on, applications for postgraduate studies will be processed twice per year.

The unified autumn term application period for doctoral studies is from 2 April to 30 April 2013.. The deadline for applications is 30 April 2013 at 3.45pm, by which time the application must be lodged with the School of Health Sciences.

The unified autumn term application period for doctoral studies is from October to November 2013.

In the spring 2013 max. 14 new students will be admitted to the doctoral programmes at the School of Health Sciences: the Doctoral Programme in Health Sciences and the Doctoral Programme in Medicine.

Applying for admission

At the School of Health Sciences the applicant should first choose a research topic/field of study and find a supervisor. Then, together with the supervisor a follow-up group should be selected for the dissertation work. An applicant needs to fill out the application form for the doctoral degree. This can be found from the school homepage under the topic Forms. The research plan and the postgraduate study plan need to be attached as appendices to the application form. The application with its appendices will be reviewed by the Scientific Postgraduate Committee.

More specific guidelines can be found from the Guide for Doctoral Studies and from the application form. The application should be addressed to the School at: Leena Nikkari, The School of Health Sciences, FI-33014 University of Tampere, Finland.

The international postgraduate program in epidemiology and public health (IPPE) now open for applications.

Admission criteria

Admissions criteria and General eligibility for Doctoral Studies can be found from the Guide for Doctoral Studies.

Approval procedure

After the application deadline has passed, the applications are handled at the Scientific Postgraduate Committee.  The Committee then puts a selection proposal to the Dean of the School. The Dean of the School approves the new students by 20 June 2013. The selection results are announced to the applicants by post.

An applicant who is dissatisfied with the student selection may submit a written request for reconsideration to the Board of the School. Such requests must be submitted within 14 days of the announcement of the results. The request, together with the reasons, shall be addressed to: University of Tampere, Registry (Kirjaamo), 33014 University of Tampere, Finland.

Enrollment

New doctoral students must enroll at the Registrar's Office. More detailed instructions on enrollment are enclosed in the letter of acceptance. Before enrolling, a new doctoral student must present at the School Office the original certificates and diplomas for the degrees and studies he/she has referred to in his/her application.

Already-admitted doctoral students are required to re-enroll at the beginning of each academic year according to instructions given by the University. Only students enrolled as 'present' may pursue studies at the University.

NOTE: The International Postgraduate Programme in Epidemiology (IPPE) has a separate application procedure. Please see the IPPE programme website.
