Aging research group at the School of Health Sciences is part of the Gerontology Research Center (GEREC). More of our activities can be found at the GEREC web page at www.gerec.fi. Our research addresses the processes of human aging and the ageing society. The multidisciplinary group brings together the perspectives of biology, epidemiology and social sciences, and applies both quantitative and qualitative approaches.
Our research focuses on health and functioning of older people, longevity and its determinants and social consequences; health and social services, old age as a stage of life, and the social construction of aging and old age. Current research includes many diverse projects such as the Vitality 90+ Study in Finnish: Tervaskannot 90+); New dynamics of longevity and the changing needs for services, COCTEL), Social inequalities in ageing; health, care and institutional reforms in the Nordic welfare model (SIA) and TamELSA.
Gerontology is taught in Medical School and in Bachelor´s and Master´s Degrees of Health Sciences. Students with their major in Public Health can select special courses in gerontology and write their thesis on themes related to aging. Medical students can write their thesis in gerontology. Graduate students aiming at PhD come from several different basic disciplines, including health sciences, medicine, social sciences, educational sciences and basic sciences.
