The group has been organised around Professor Sami Pirkola, the holder of the only Chair of Social Psychiatry in Finland. The group has successfully established itself within the School of Health Sciences.
The strength of the group lies in its diverse research interests and in the differing backgrounds and expertise of its members. Over the last few years, much of our work has focused on epidemiology of mental health problems in general population, among adolescents, and in specific groups such as prisoners.
Our interests also include psychosomatics and mental health services research. The researchers in our group practice teaching students in the bachelor and masters degrees of public health, doctoral studies in social psychiatry, and also in teaching medical students.
