Costs of health services & medication and productivity costs of Diabetes

Principal investigator: Pekka Rissanen

In this study, use and costs of health care services and medicines as well as productivity costs are examined among Finnish diabetes population. It is known that health care costs and productivity costs of diabetes care create a considerable economic burden. However, the costs per a person with diabetes have been diminishing since year 2005. Still, large differences in costs of diabetes care exists between Finnish hospital districts.

The main objectives in this study are to examine the recent development in health care use and costs and in use of medicines among Finnish prevalent diabetes population. More specific questions relate to the associations between medication costs and use of health care services and the influence of different care patterns on productivity costs. These themes are assessed both at patient level as well as at hospital district level.

Data are collected from a number of Finnish national health care registries, including e.g.  hospital discharge registry, registries of purchases of prescription medications and causes of death registry. All registries are linked at individual patient level by using a unique personal identification code. At present, data cover the years 1998 – 2007, but it will be updated to the latest possible year. Basically, data include all prevalent diabetes patients in Finland in these years, i.e. it contain information on about 300 000 individuals. Regional and district -level data are derived from the national Sotka-net -database.
