Study contents & structure of studies

The PGH programme comprises 120 ECTS and the duration is two academic years (2017-2019). The overall tentative structure is below. The right to make changes is reserved.

General Studies: 10 ECTS

  • Orientation and study planning skills (2 ECTS)

  • Finnish elementary course (only non-Finnish speakers*) (3 ECTS)

  • Academic writing (5 ECTS)

Advanced Studies: 110 ECTS
includes: Compulsory Core Courses, Internship and Master Thesis Studies

  • Overview and key concepts in public health (5 ECTS)
  • Global dynamics influencing health (5 ECTS)

  • Basic epidemiology (5 ECTS)

  • Health promotion – policies and programmes (5 ECTS)

  • Environment, technology and health (5 ECTS)

  • The application of economics to health care (5 ECTS)

  • Strengthening health systems and social protection (5 ECTS)

  • Gender and wellbeing in the global North and South (5 ECTS)

  • Poverty in the world: Hunger, inequalities and action (5 ECTS)

  • Qualitative health research (5 ECTS)

  • Basic biostatistics (5 ECTS)

Internship 10 ECTS

  • Internship or work placement abroad or in Finland (10 ECTS)

Master Thesis Studies 30 ECTS

  • Project planning and management (5 ECTS)

  • Health in disasters, conflicts and complex humanitarian emergencies (5 ECTS)

  • Nordic welfare systems: Past, present, and future (5 ECTS)Theories of health economics (5 ECTS)

  • Theories of health economics

  • Research on scool-aged children's health and welfare

*Finnish-speakers take an additional 3 ECTS of elective studies instead of the Elementray Finnish course.

**Any suitable courses from UTA, the other universities in Tampere or elsewhere, e.g. Unipid courses, can also be used as electives if stated in the personal study plan.
