Master’s Degree Programme in Public and Global Health

Meet some of our current students

Chantelle from the USA

I was motivated to apply for the MHS programme at the University of Tampere because it was a great opportunity to learn from and work with experts in a number of disciplines.

Studying biostatistics and epidemiology have given me a real foundation for my future employment goals as they are both important for any research I will undertake in the future. I had limited experience with qualitative research, so the course helped me to familiarize myself more with the methods used in that field.

The opportunity to participate in a project evaluation in Mongolia allowed me to work in an interactive and hands-on environment. It was a positive challenge to apply classroom learning to a real-life situation and see how public health initiatives work on the ground.

I really like my classmates. Many of them come from different countries and parts of the world and it has been nice getting to know them. I would recommend this programme to anyone who wants to study with an internationally-minded staff and wants to gain a new perspective.

Christopher from Kenya and Paula from Ireland

We both have nursing backgrounds, and are both interested in how better public health policies can positively impact on populations. Chris is particularly interested in strengthening health care provision at primary level to better serve the needs of disadvantaged communities. I have a background in Clinical Genetics and am looking at how the specialty can help persons and families affected by genetic disease, and the ethical challenges which can sometimes emerge as a result of new health technologies.

We have both enjoyed the diversity of the student body and how passionate they are about improving public health in their own communities, so when we were given an internship opportunity to work in the University assisting the faculty to improve and promote the programme for the next intake we were delighted! We’ve seen first- hand how committed the faculty are, and we believe the programme for 2017 is going to be truly innovative and will rise to the challenges presented by globalization and an ever-changing world.
