JoPe, a game for leadership evaluation in health care and social services organizations

The general aim of our project is to help developing leadership and thus the operation and effectiveness of social services and health care organizations. The aim is reached through producing an innovative method for research, a serious game called “JoPe”. The content of the game is based on theory-driven research questions, expert knowledge within the research group and on-site identified practical needs in the five collaborating social services and health care organizations.

The context of the game is a fictional health care or social services organization. In this everyday surrounding the leader faces several practical, strategic and ethical choices regarding, for example, organizational procedures, human resources and prioritization. To take the example of prioritization, the leader is given several mutually exclusive alternatives to choose from. These prioritization choices are constructed to force the player to decide, for example, between different austerity measures and framed to test several theory-driven hypothesis to fulfil the information gaps in previous research literature.

All the decisions of the leader are scored in terms of economic efficiency, productivity, and wellbeing of personnel. Furthermore the decisions are also rated based on theory of competing leadership roles. The scoreboard is visible to the leader all the time and he/she is also able compare his/her results to the results within his/her own organization and with all other players in the game. 

Our novel approach offers benefits for both research and practice. Researchers gain rich data not only including the decisions made by the leaders but also capturing all the log information during the game (e.g. how long it takes to make a certain decision). Leaders themselves get on-line feedback on their answers and decisions, whereas the organizations these leaders represent get insight on what kind of leaders do they have and what kind of decisions they make.

Our project group includes research specialists from diverse fields: social and health policy and management, sociology, information science and biostatistics, together with leaders from the five collaborating social services and health care organizations. The project is funded by the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation (TEKES) and the collaborating organizations.
