Jari Hietanen, PhD.

Department of Psychology
Utacas fellow 2005-2006

My research is focused on studying human perception of non-verbal, socially relevant information. More specifically, the aim is to reveal how our mind (brain) works when processing cues signalling of other people's emotions (facial expressions) and their direction of attention (gaze direction) (see: http://www.uta.fi/laitokset/psyk/hip). Knowledge on the cognitive processes and brain functions which serve social information processing and, therefore, regulation of social behaviour will be essential when trying to promote our understanding of the human behaviour in social systems. This kind of an approach also holds a promise to bridge the gap between biological and social sciences.
