2007-2008

My main research interests are the politics of environmental knowledge and socio-economic sustainability of natural resource use. My current research project "Knowledge -Policy -Interfaces and the Politics of Local Forest Use" investigates these issues in the context of Finnish forest policies. The focus is on how the knowledge, which is gained in the acts of making science and politics or developing every day economic coping strategies are translated to policy processes and from localised practices to national level. The task is to explore the ways to create such a knowledge-policy -interface which has the potential to incorporate knowledge from the multiple socio-economic implications of local, innovative forest use practices into the sphere of politics thereby further facilitating their development. Knowledge and policy are often viewed as stable, extant categories, whereas the real challenge is to create genuine interaction in which both parties learn from each other. My previous research indicates that the major challenge in reaching this task is to develop interactional expertise which facilitates the communication between experience-based knowledge and different types of scientific findings (aggregate/local, quantified/ qualitative), and by developing policy practices which create a fruitful communicative space for the exchange of knowledge and expertise. The study is based on an in-depth case study on the planning and implementation of the National Forest Plan 2010 in Finland. In addition, it will include an overview of theoretical literature on the use of quantitative and qualitative indicators in evaluating dynamic socio-economic affects of resource use.
