Meyda Yeğenoğlu has published widely on postcolonialism, orientalism, Islam, secularism and religion, nationalism, cosmopolitanism, Europe, globalization and migrancy. Her work crosses disciplinary boundaries and brings different strands of thought such as deconstruction, psychoanalysis and postcolonial into productive rendezvous with each other.

She has received her Ph.D from University of California, Santa Cruz. She has held visiting appointments at Columbia University, Oberlin College, Rutgers University, New York University, University of Vienna and Oxford University.

She is the author of Colonial Fantasies: Towards a Feminist Reading of Orientalism (Cambridge University Press, 1998) and Islam, Migrancy and Hospitality in Europe (Palgrave-MacMillan, 2012).


Her articles are published in various journals such as:

Race and Ethnic Relations; Culture and Religion; Philosophy and Social Criticism, Inscriptions; Radical Philosophy; Postmodern Culture; Toplum ve Bilim; Defter;  Dipnot and Doğu-Batı; Philosophy and Social Criticism.

Areas of specialty

Post-structuralist Theory, Postcolonial Theory, Globalization and Migrancy, Orientalism, Multiculturalism, Cosmopolitanism, Nationalism, Secularism and Religious Identity, Islam and neoliberal governance.

Currently she is working on the Armenian issue from a deconstructive perspective, addressing issues on mourning, forgiveness, and secrecy.


Editorial and booard membership

She has been a member of the Thematic Network of Women’s Studies in Europe (ATHENA) for the Socrates Programme of the Europen Commission of the European Union (since 2004-2010).

She acted as a member between 2004-2006 for the Working Group (under Athena Thematic Network Group) Postcolonial Europe: Gender, Ethnicity and Migration. http://www.athena2.org/postcolonialeurope

She is currently an advisory Board Member for the Project Oecumene: Citizenship After Orientalism, European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant (Institutions, values, beliefs and Behaviour ER-AG-SH2). Run by the Open University, UK.

She acted as an editorial board member for The Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, (2001-2011) and the journal Feminist Europa, (Since 2003).

She is an editorial board member for Westview Press: Politics and Culture series, (since 2004).

She has been regularly serving as an Expert-Evaluator for the proposals submitted to European Commission since 2004.
