Introduction

The Institute for Advanced Social Research in the research collegium of the University of Tampere. It was founded on 28 November 2002 under the name University of Tampere Centre for Advanced Studies (UTACAS) and the first group of six Fellows started its term in August 2003. The name of the institute was changed into the Institutute for Advanced Social Research, IASR, in the the process of an extensive reform of the administrative structure of the university in 2010.  Today, the IASR hosts 25-30 Fellows annually.

The aim of the IASR is to serve the scienctific community and the University of Tampere

  • by engaging in advanced research focused on society
  • by enhancing research proficiency and facilities in the University
  • by promoting multidisciplinary and international interaction

The IASR accomplishes its mission by awarding fixed-term one- or two-year fellowships annually. These fellowships are intended for academics and scholars from all over the world, even if a significant number of fellowships are granted to researchers already integrated into the University of Tampere.

The idea is to build up an interesting group of academics and scholars from a variety of disciplines to create an inspiring setting generating new stimuli, co-operation patterns, and innovative research networks. Therefore, it is assumed that the Fellows will work regularly on the premises of the IASR, which is located in the Atalpa Building (Ratapihankatu 55, 2nd and 3rd floor) on the main campus of the University of Tampere.

The IASR organizes scientific events, such as lectures and small-scale seminars, where the Fellows and guests both from Finland and abroad introduce their work to the members of the scholarly community of the IASR. Whenever possible, these events are open to the entire academic community.
