The Bachelor of Social Sciences programme is a lower university degree programme which consists of 180 ECTS credits and takes three to four years to complete. The interdisciplinary programme includes basic and intermediate studies in the major subject, studies in at least one minor subject, language studies and general studies of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Studies in the major subject familiarise the student with the scientific terminology of his/her field of study with its most important theoretical and methodological concepts, and its most significant research results and problems relevant to the objectives of the degree programme. Towards the end of their studies in the programme, the students write a Bachelor's thesis, an independent research on a topic of their choosing. The length of the thesis is usually 20-30 pages. Major subjects of the programme vary somewhat between different cycles of the Bachelor's programme.
Degree students must also have one or more minor subjects which are studied to a lesser extent than the major subject. Students may choose their minor fairly freely, but minor subject studies must include at least 25 ECTS credits in one subject. Often the minor subjects are other subjects in the Bachelor's programme, but they can also be chosen from other Schools.
Studies in the Bachelor of Social Sciences programme require active participation and attendance in the classes. Thus, students need to be present in Tampere during the terms.
Students admitted to the programme must have completed their secondary education and be qualified to enter an institution of higher (university) education. A good command of English is also required. For more information on applying, see How to apply.
