TAMPERE IN BRIEF

Tampere is the third largest city in Finland and the largest inland centre in the Nordic countries.

Currently there are approximately 228,000 inhabitants in Tampere, and close to half a million inhabitants in Tampere Region, which comprises Tampere and its neighbouring municipalities.

Tampere is one of the three most rapidly developing regions in Finland. It is a centre of leading-edge technology, research, education, culture, sports and business.

HOW TO GET TO TAMPERE

Tampere is located in southern Finland some 170 km north of Helsinki, capital of the country. It is within easy reach: less than two hours by train or by car from Helsinki and even more conveniently accessible by air, thanks to Tampere's good flight connections. 

Several international airlines offer regular flights to Helsinki, and there are also several daily connecting flights on week-days to Tampere-Pirkkala airport. There are also direct flights to Tampere from for example Stockholm (Sweden), Bremen (Germany) and Budapest (Hungary). However, please note that flight connections vary according to the season.

From Tampere-Pirkkala airport to city center

If you are flying directly to Tampere, you can catch a bus or a taxi from ther airport to the city center. The bus ticket costs 5 euros which can be paid in cash when entering the bus.

Bus line 1A operates between Tampere city center and Tampere-Pirkkala airport. You can find the schedules online.

You can also catch a taxi at the airport. The taxi journey costs about 40 euros. In Finland, taxis are reliable.


By train from Helsinki-Vantaa airport to Tampere

From Helsinki-Vantaa airport you can buy a ticket straight to Tampere, but will have to change trains at Tikkurila station (a 9 minute journey from the airport). Trains from the Helsinki-Vantaa airport to Tikkurila leave every 10 minutes and there are 1-2 trains per hour to Tampere except night time. The duration of the journey is less than two hours.

By bus from Helsinki-Vantaa airport to Tampere

Buses run from Helsinki to Tampere approximately every hour. The duration of the journey is approximately two hours.

In general, public transport in Finland is reliable, punctual, efficient, comfortable and affordable.

HOW TO GET TO THE UNIVERSITY

The main campus of the University of Tampere is close to the Tampere city centre, some ten minutes' walk from the railway station. The conference will be held in
