Energy Policy Research Group

Energy policy research group (ENERGYPOL)

The energy policy research group responds to the on-going, complex transformation of energy policy by conducting interdisciplinary research. It combines perspectives from international relations, political science, policy sciences, environmental studies, political economy, sociology and various fields of area studies, among others. The group probes the international trends currently shaping energy policy and enquires into their regional consequences: for example, the interaction between a fossil fuels based traditional energy agenda and the emerging ’greener’ energy agenda, including climate change and sustainability; and the new better interconnected and more competitive markets with new suppliers.

The group’s main geographical focus area is the wider European area, where it specifically emphasises Finland, northern Europe, the European Union, and the Union’s energy relations with its main external suppliers in Russia and northern Africa, as well as energy policies in these countries, without forgetting important transit states. In addition, the work includes potential new suppliers as well as comparisons between regions such as Europe and Asia.

The group develops new approaches to examine the formation of energy policy in the complex policy environment faced by political and economic institutions as well as energy industries alike, including the resource geographic, financial, institutional and ecological dimensions. While the group’s research is informed by new and established theories, it also commits itself to producing policy relevant and critical work contributing to the public debate in this increasingly important field of policy. Special attention is committed to fieldwork for compiling rich empirical material.
