Research Program on the Politics of Space and the Environment (POLEIS)

POLEIS is a multidisciplinary research programme based on regional studies and environmental policy. The programme produces new knowledge on its research topics which usually are contextualized in concrete processes, situations and places. The programme provides an international research environment that brings together work carried out in the Politics of Nature and the Environment Research Group (PONTE), the Space and Political Agency Research Group (SPARG), and the Urban and Regional Studies Group (SENTE).

POLEIS fosters research that is both societally relevant and internationally acknowledged. The research programme is problem-oriented so that the topics studied are often directly related to problems which require solutions. The theoretical approaches in POLEIS focus on spatiality, the dynamics of politicisation and political agency, the hybridity of natural and cultural phenomena, the interrelatedness of governance and politics, urban and regional development and leadership, and regional innovation systems. Case study methodology is often employed.

Research in POLES focuses on various empirical topics, the most central of which are:

Changing state space, transnationalization and spatial belonging

   Regional innovation systems and communities

The politics of nature: Nature conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources

The viability, sustainability and resilience of urban environments

Territoriality of politics, networks of governance, legitimacy and democracy

   Youthful participation and political agency

The politics of land use, planning and civic action

Culture and creative industries and leadership in urban and regional development

POLEIS organises a weekly research seminar and thematic international seminars in cooperation with its partners. More information about the operation is found on the websites of the SPARG, PONTE, and SENTE research groups.
