Doctoral Programme in Higher Education Administration, Management and Economics (HEAME)

The Doctoral Programme in Higher Education Administration, Management and Economics (HEAME) is offered jointly by two units, the Higher Education Group (HEG) at the University of Tampere and the Higher Education Governance and Management unit (HEGOM) at the University of Helsinki. HEAME has been granted funding from the Academy of Finland for the period 2012-2015.

Earlier research and training in HEAME has been related to thematic areas including higher education policy and governmental steering of higher education, changes in the organisation, leadership and management of higher education institutions and on the economic aspects of higher education. In the funding period 2012-2015, the HEAME focus will be more specifically on the organisational adaptability of higher education institutions to their environment in the context of national innovation systems. Research with a comparative perspective related to organisational design, management and leadership practices and organisational behaviour will be given especially high priority. For instance, organisational dynamics of research-intensive or “world class” universities, institutional capacity building in developing and transition countries, academic leadership, change management, and structural factors explaining organisational adaptability are some of the promising, yet still somewhat under-researched areas in the field of higher education research.

A successful applicant to HEAME programme must hold the status of postgraduate student in the School of Management (University of Tampere) in the field of administrative sciences. Qualified applicants to HEAME are expected to provide separate applications for the processing of HEAME board. (NB. The application period for HEAME has ended and the student selections have been made.)

The courses, seminars and other programme activities of HEAME are organized jointly by HEG and HEGOM. You can find the programme's curriculum at HEAME's Studies-website.
