HEAME studies

Studies in HEAME 2012-2015 comprise of doctoral studies (60 ECTS) and doctoral dissertations at Universities of Tampere and Helsinki (the dissertation carrying 180 ECTS at the University of Tampere; credits not specified by the University of Helsinki). Information about each University's selection of available courses for postgraduate student are available via following links:

Information about seminar schedules is available in HEAME Moodle (registration required).

Doctoral studies (60 ECTS)

(1) Orientation to doctoral studies. The purpose of orientation is to introduce students to HEAME practices and studies. Orientation also provides general information on doctoral studies at the University of Tampere and the University of Helsinki.

(2) Methodological studies. The aim of the methodological studies is to equip students with methodological tools to develop their doctoral dissertations in terms of research design, selection of methodology, data collection and data analysis. Students will be introduced to the research traditions in social sciences, philosophy of science and research in administrative science and higher education. Methodological studies also include training in academic communication, ethical guidelines and good research practices.

(3) Substance studies. The aim of substance studies is to familiarise the students with the concepts and theories related to practice and policy in higher education organisations, administration, management, leadership and economics. Substance studies also include courses, seminars, workshops and training sessions intended to develop the students’ transferable skills.

(4) Doctoral seminars. The aim of the doctoral seminars is to support the progress of the doctoral dissertation. Seminars also train students in scholarly argumentation: to present papers, to receive criticism, and to exchange opinions in a scholarly manner.

Doctoral dissertation (180 ECTS)

All doctoral dissertation topics will be drawn from the HEAME focal areas. The final dissertation topics will be decided by the student in consultation with the supervisors. Dissertations may take the form of a monograph or a series of articles and will comply with all the formal requirements of the School of Management (University of Tampere) or the Faculty of Social Sciences (University of Helsinki). It is recommended that all dissertations be written in English.
