Annual Conference of the Finnish Political Science Association 2014

Finnish Political Science Association

XLVI Annual Conference

6-7 March 2014, University of Tampere

Borderlines

It has been said that politics is the art of the possible. But what is possible, and what is not? In politics the room to maneuvre can often be rather small. A recent theme in Finnish political debate has been the limits of policy-making. But who sets these limits? Where are these borders drawn?

If politics is the art of the possible, is political science then the science of the possible? Is science an activity without borders? Is it in essence an activity which crosses borders? Science and research is to a great extent about dealing with borders of different kinds. Sometimes it is also about drawing borders – or coping with borders drawn by others. Borders separate, but they also unite. Borders are defended and monitored. There are borders between scientific disciplines; between research and practice; between national and international.  There is a border between economics and politics. There is a border between public and private.  We have the borders of Europe, and we have limits to growth, and limits to resilience. They are diverse and manifold. They are a research topic unto their own.

The overarching theme of the Finnish Political Science Association’s  XLVI Annual Conference to be held in March 2014, is borderlines. Contributors are welcomed to reflect on the issues of borders, their limits and functions – as well as to meet colleagues at Tampere!
