Working life partnerships

Matching education with the requirements of working life is one of the core values of the RES master’s programme.

We are continuously developing the programme, and one update for the next round will be a student-employer collaboration course. As part of their studies, students can conduct real-life projects for our working life partners representing private and public sectors as well as NGOs. This means that a working life partner assigns a practical problem related to its operations to a group of students.

Students’ project work forms part of their master’s studies and is coached by the teaching staff of the master’s programme.

For its working life partners, RES offers an opportunity to participate in the development of the skills of their potential future employers, to establish international networks, to enhance its visibility and to hear fresh ideas.

Collaboration between our master’s students and working life partners can also take the form of internships and foreign exchange studies, and research for master’s thesis.

Examples of possible outcomes of student-employer collaboration:

  • Preparing a report on the image of Finland in St. Petersburg newspapers
  • Writing a briefing paper on the Russian position in Arctic governance
  • Planning and organizing a press tour for Russian business journalists in Finland
  • Doing media follow-up on a specific event in Russia

Internships

Alongside the taught modules, an internship can be included in the degree. Students of the RES Master's programme have previously done their internships in, for example, Tampere Peace Research Institute TAPRI, UN Joint Inspection Unit in Geneva, Finland Future Research Centre (University of Turku), and the Baltic Institute of Finland.

University of Tampere offers a limited number of grants for internships. Read more on internships and grants at UTA.

Applying for the UTA internship grant

  • Application period is annually in December - January (for an internship taking place during the beginning calendar year). Students are informed about the application round by email and on this webpage.
  • The employer must be Finnish, but it can also be located abroad. Thus international organisations are not accepted. The employer can be at the public sector, private enterprise or organisation.
  • The financial support from the university to the employer is 1800 euros/internship (2016).
  • The student must always discuss beforehand with his/her supervising professor about the internship. He / she must get a written document from the professor stating that internship can be used as part of his/her Master's programme studies.
  • Internship positions can be found e.g. via UTA Career Services website
Students are responsible for the search for a suitable internship position. When you start looking for an internship, assess your interests and goals, evaluate your possibilities, find out about suitable employers and be active in your search.
