"Tutkaripaja": how to prepare a succesful research funding application
on Monday 31 October at 14:00-16:00, Pinni A3107

Preparing research funding application is a critical skill for researchers at every stage of career. In addition to the big institutional research funders (like Academy of Finland, Tekes, European Commission), there is a wide range of individual foundations that offer funding opportunities for researchers (see, for example, Aurora database, http://www.aurora-tietokanta.fi/). In this seminar, we will focus on these foundations, and offer insights of how to prepare a successful application. We will hear short presentations from professors who have been evaluating applications in various foundations, and researcher’s experiences in application processes. After the presentations there will be a lot of time for discussion and reflection.

Aurora -tietokanta

Aurora -tietokantaan on koottu tieteen, taiteen ja kulttuurin rahoituslähteet. Tietokannasta voi etsiä apurahoja ja muuta rahoitusta.

Coffee will be served, so registration will be needed. Please register by email to Mirja Björk on October 24 at the latest.

Program:
Mika Skippari: Overview of funding opportunities.
Kaisa Herne and Jari Stenvall: What evaluators want to see in good application?
Malla Mattila: How did I get the money? Experiences of successful application processes.

Call for Papers: JKK Doctoral Research Seminar 21.11.2016

The School of Management (JKK) organizes a multidisciplinary doctoral research seminar on November 21, 2016. For the seminar, we invite proposals for empirical or conceptual research papers or research plans for doctoral thesis. The topics of the papers might address (but are not limited to!) one (or several) of our School’s cross-disciplinary research themes, which are:
• Public-private interface • Services and innovations • Urban and regional development • Justice, equality and wellbeing • Responsible and sustainable development • Participation and political agency • Democracy and power • Security and risk management • Value creation • Performance, measurement and evaluation

In the seminar, the submitted papers will be divided into multidisciplinary sessions based on the above mentioned research themes. Each session will be chaired by a senior scholar having expertise on the specific theme. Therefore, the seminar offers doctoral students great opportunity to present their work to a multidisciplinary group of peer doctoral students and get comments to their papers from an expert outside their research group or discipline.
Submitted papers should preferably be in English, but we also accept papers in Finnish. Participants are expected to read the papers beforehand and participate in discussing them.

A doctoral student presenting a paper and participating to the seminar will be credited 3 ECTS. A doctoral student participating to the seminar, but not presenting a paper, will be credited 1 ECTS by submitting a learning diary (minimum of 1000 words) to her / his thesis supervisor.

Important deadlines
Deadline for submitting a paper proposal (about 300 words), October 25, 2016.
Notification of acceptance by October 28, 2016.
Deadline for submitting the full paper (no longer than 9 000 words), November 14, 2016.
Registration to the seminar (mirja.bjork@uta.fi) due by November 14, 2016 (for those who will not present a paper).

How to submit the paper
Proposals for paper presentation should be sent to Mika Skippari and Kaisa Herne. Please indicate in the cover page, which research theme(s) your paper addresses (if applicable).
Submission of the full papers to Mirja Björk.
