SAC - Self-Access Centre

Welcome to our website! Here we have gathered for you lists of our materials, useful links for self-studying and much more.

Dear all,

With heavy hearts the Self-Access Centre (SAC) supervisors wish to inform you that the Centre will be closed for the foreseeable future after May 15th, 2020. The Centre will be closed due to economic issues and a change of policy.

We would like to thank all our customers, students and staff alike, all the people who have participated in our events, booked language clinics, taken tests and so on. The Self-Access Centre’s aim has been to be an inviting space where people can refresh their language skills in languages already experienced or learn new languages. We haven’t turned away even those who just wanted to take a nap on our cosy sofas. In case you didn’t know, the Self-Access Centre has been working already from the 80s onwards (see the black and white photo attached) and in various locations. Likewise, the supervisors have changed through the years, with many of them having had a respectably long career at the SAC. As language students, the work in the SAC has provided them with invaluable experience that has stood them in good stead later on in work-life.

The Self-Access Centre has always been a place made by its customers, as without you there wouldn’t be us. We would like to thank you for all the experiences shared with you, friendships made, and the good times we’ve had together. Working at the Self-Access Centre has been very rewarding, for it has been remarkable to see the passion for language learning and hear different kinds of stories behind the learning. We have also received help from our customers and we are truly thankful for that. We have attached to this post some photos from our working years. You can also see some event photos here on Facebook.

At the moment it is unclear if the Self-Access Centre will start working again someday in any shape or form, although perhaps a ‘virtual SAC’ may be possible in the future. Nevertheless, it is to be hoped that some services of the SAC (e.g. the language clinics and the Language Link tandem learning service) may be offered for example as a part of courses. We hope that that the Language Centre will inform you of any such developments as soon as it can.

We would have wished to have had the chance to work with you more. Words are not enough to express our gratitude, but we hope that one day a new kind of SAC will emerge.

If you have any questions, greetings or wishes, we recommend that you address your message to the Language Centre, as also the Self-Access Centre’s email address will stop working from the end of May.

Best wishes to you all on the part of the SAC team
