How can I learn languages by myself?

The first thing to remember is that you have already learnt at least one language by yourself: your very own mother tongue. Even when you started to learn one or two more languages at school - in the classroom with a teacher - you were the one who did the learning. Nobody else can learn for you, only you yourself.

However, the way in which you learnt and what you learnt were certainly not the same when you were a baby and when you were at school. As a very young child, you listened to people speaking, connected sounds and meanings naturally and tried them out yourself. At school, the teacher chose what you should learn and made you practise both the forms and meanings of language consciously through different kinds of exercises.

To be a successful independent language learner, try to combine both natural and conscious learning in the following ways:

  • Seek out all the opportunities you can to listen to, read, speak and write the language you want to learn
  • Pick up, categorize and store new words and structures which you come across in the speech or writing of others (either through personal contact, TV, online audio and video, books, newspapers and magazines)
  • Be ready to try out these new words and structures in your own speech or writing even if this means making mistakes. Making mistakes means that you are progressing!
  • Make a note of the mistakes which you make, analyse them and practise the correct forms consciously through different kinds of exercises.

The Self-Access Centre offers you a diverse range of language learning material!
