Englannin kieli – English

English courses

>> What kind of English courses does the Language Centre offer?

We offer English courses which fall into two main categories: mandatory courses and optional courses. Most mandatory courses carry 4 credits and optional courses are 2 credits.

>> What English course do I have to take?

That depends on your School and degree programme.
Mandatory courses form part of the requirement for the degree programmes of the different Schools; at least one optional course in a foreign language is required as part of most degree programmes and students can choose freely which they wish to take.

>> What help can I get if my English skills are below B2 (see CEFR)?

If your English skills are below the level required for successful completion of our courses (B2), then we advise you either to take one or both of our preparatory courses (Englannin kielen valmentavat opintojaksot) or then to brush up on your skills by doing appropriate self-study work in the Self-Access Centre (SAC) in Pinni B5071

>> What is the Council of Europe Framework (CEFR)?

The Council of Europe Framework of Reference (CEFR) describes what learners of a language can typically do at six different levels: A1 and A2 (basic user), B1 and B2 (independent user), and C1 and C2 (proficient user). B2 is the level required to successfully complete the ‘Introduction to Academic English’ or ‘Foundations of English Business Communication’ courses, while the optional courses require from B2 to C1.

>> Which courses are counted as mandatory?

The main mandatory course is Introduction to Academic English (if you have selected English as your first foreign language), which is run for groups from specific Schools. This means that only students belonging to the School may enroll on the course.  We also offer transdisciplinary courses that are open to students from all Schools.

Introduction to Academic English is designed to introduce students to the use of English within the context of an academic environment related to their field of study. Since this is an introductory course, it is intended to be taken in the first year of university studies.

The programmes of some Schools require alternative English courses:

The School of Management

  • Foundations of English Business Communication Modules 1 and 2 at Bachelor´s degree level
  • Advanced Business English Communication at Master´s degree level.

The School of Medicine

  • Introduction to Scientific Writing course

At least one optional course (in a foreign language) is mandatory for most degrees.  English optional courses carry 2 credits and are open to all students of the University.
The focus and content of these courses is wider than the mandatory courses and includes, for example, intercultural communication, debating, academic presentations, legal English (recommended for students of law), dialogue and a selection of writing courses.

>> Does the Language Centre offer any additional courses taught in English?

Yes, we do.

  • Preparatory Courses in spoken and written English
  • Scientific Writing Module A (Writing Clinic) and Module B (Thesis Writing online) for students on the International Master´s Programmes.
  • Intercultural Studies Programme (15 ECTS) complements any major and can contribute towards your internationalization module
