Academic writing

Writing academic texts is in one’s native language is complex enough, but maintaining academic rigour in a foreign language can be seriously challenging. Fortunately, help is out there. There are a number of excellent online resources that can help you develop your writing skills and polish your texts.

Purdue University’s Online Writing Lab (OWL) – a resource that is mentioned many times in the Resources section, and for good reason – offers excellent advice on academic writing themes and all good writing. Browse the Academic Writing menu to find tips on everything from reducing your word count to ensuring your arguments are logical.

Carolyn Brimley Norris has produced an extremely thought-provoking and helpful book, Academic Writing in English, based on her experiences of teaching academic writing at the University of Helsinki. The book deals in particular with the problems Finns face when writing in English, and it is available online (free!) in pdf form. In addition to step-by-step instructions on dealing with the writing process, Academic Writing in English also contains practical exercises.

Aalto University’s Academic Writing in English site contains a comprehensive writing guide designed with the physical sciences in mind. Nevertheless, the site has lots of information that is transferable to the arts, social sciences and humanities as well. The site has separate sections on cohesion, style, grammar and punctuation.

In addition to the above resources, there are a number of guides available online that are certain worth taking the time to read. Writing for Scholarly Journals: Publishing in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is a highly illuminating guide to writing and publishing articles for humanities-based researchers.

The Unofficial Guide for Authors (or how to produce research articles worth citing) is a European Commission-produced guide on writing and publishing scientific articles. Ostensibly written with scientists in mind, this very helpful and thought-provoking guide is equally applicable to the social sciences.

The Science of Scientific Writing is also definitely worth your time. Despite being first published over 25 years ago, this remarkably insightful article continues to be relevant today by showing how, as writers, we must consider the importance of the reader’s interpretation.
