How to convert a thesis into pdf-format

Computers for general use in the Library are equipped with the PDF-XChange software to convert to pdf format. This software is also currently available in the University's computer classrooms.

If you are unable to make use of the University's computers, you can do the conversion on Adobe's web page (5 free-of-charge pdf files per registration).

If you have written your thesis in WORD:

Method 1 (PDF-XChange):

  • open your file in WORD
  • select File-Print (Word 2007: top left corner Office button - Print - Print)
  • select the printer PDF-XChange 4.0.
  • press the adjacent Properties key and select resolution at least 600 dpi at the Paper option
  • select Page size A4 at the Paper option
  • select Confirm to Specification PDF/A-1b (RGB) at the General option
  • then press ok twice (= print)
  • select where you want to save the pdf file

Method 2 (Bullzip PDF Printer , free program, not installed in library computers):

  • open your file in WORD
  • select File-Print (Word 2007: top left corner Office button - Print - Print)
  • select the Bullzip PDF Printer
  • press print
  • select pdf file name and where you want to save the pdf file at the General option
  • Change author and title (if necessary) at the Document option
  • Select quality Prepress, Compatibility level PDF 1.5 (Acrobat 6.x) and select PDF/A-1b at the Document option
  • press Save

Merging one or more pdf-files into one file (PDF-Exchange v4)

  1. Open PDF-Tools 4
  2. Open the Split/Merge tool
  3. Click Add - Add files
  4. Select the files for merging
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 as necessary
  6. Rearrange the files in the order you want them to appear in the merged pdf-file (select a file and click the button Up or Down)
  7. If you want only selected pages from one ore more files, select range of pages to include (double click the filename)
  8. Click Next
  9. Select All Pages to One Document and click Next
  10. Check that the pages are in correct order (click green arrow left to the document) and click Next
  11. Check the PDF settings and click Next
  12. Select the folder and give a file name for the merged PDF-file and click Process
  13. Finally click Finish
