Welcome to get acquainted with the information search processes in humanities. The purpose of this web site is to introduce the different stages of information search process and the information sources available at the University of Tampere.
There are plenty of data, information and information sources, but the question is, how to find high-quality, reliable, up-to-date information. The acquaintance with the most important information sources, the procedures for publishing scholarly publications and the information seeking practices of one's own discipline are all involved in the process of scientific research. In addition, the acquisition and critical evaluation of scholarly information are also included in the concept of information literacy.
Information literacy stands for the ability to recognise the need for information, to search and locate information, and in addition, the evaluation and the use of information in both critical and ethical manner.
This web guide concentrates on the entire process of the acquisition of information, which entails the specifying of the information need, and the search, the singling out, the evaluation and the acquirement of information.
Information retrieval as itself, in other words, the information seeking from databases, will be examined starting from the basics of information retrieval. Moreover, this web guide will also introduce the central information sources at the Tampere University Library.
