
The library card is free. To obtain a card, fill out the appropriate application form either in the circulation department or online. When coming to collect the card, a picture ID must be presented. New students can get their student card activated a library card. Signing the application form is to agree to conform to the rules of the Library. The owner of the card is responsible for the items borrowed. If the card is lost, the Library must be informed as soon as possible. The fee for a second card is 3 euros.
Please carry the card always with you when doing library business.
Student card as a library card
A PIN code is needed for self-service borrowing and also when renewing or reserving items online. The default code is 12345 and it can be changed on the Patron-information page in Tamcat. The code may include 5-12 letters and/or numbers.
In case the code is forgotten, a new one can be obtained only when presenting a picture ID at the circulation desk. It is not possible to obtain it by phone or e-mail.
Patrons are incouraged to fetch the textbooks or items from the general collection themselves and use self-service borrowing. A circulation attendant will help you with overnight and weekend loans.
You will find your reservation at the Main Library on the self-service shelf during circulation office service hours by your family name. You can use the self-service machine to check out the reserved book; to do so, you will need your own library card.
Overnight and weekend loans from the reference library are possible to check out only two hours before closing at the earliest. Overnight loans are to be returned by 10 a.m. the following morning, weekend loans by 10 a.m. on Monday. There is a charge on overdue overnight and weekend loans. The charges can be found on the service fees list.
It is possible to check out books as short loans from the Textbook Reading Room from 10:00 a.m. (one book per person). Books have to be returned the following opening day by 10:00 a.m. to the reading room librarian or using the self-service machine. It is also possible to leave books in the book-return bin. Overdue books from the Textbook Reading Room carry a charge of 15 euro, and, in addition, the borrowing and renewing rights will be withheld for one week.
Some items are not loaned out and have to be read in-house, e.g., theses and items in special collections.

Journals less than 10 years old: overnight and weekend loans
There area several different ways to renew loans: through Tamcat, online or by sending renewal request to uusinnat@uta.fi. The renewal period starts on the day when the message was sent.
A loan can be renewed if there are no requests for it and if your total amount of fines and fees is not over 10 euros. You are allowed to renew your textbooks max 10 times only and if there are no reservations before that. After 10 renewals you need to return the textbook. This restriction does not apply to books from the general collection. Patrons can also sign on to a fee-based automatic renewal agreement. Self-service requests can be made in Tamcat.
When the requested item becomes available, the patron will be notified by e-mail or by regular mail about the pick-up point and the last pick-up date.
Item available notices are not sent out during weekends or weekday holidays; e.g., if a requested book becomes available on Friday the patron will be notified the following Monday.
If the requested items are in a closed storage, they will be available to the patron the following weekday. It is also possible to request items held at other library branches - Humanika or Tertio. These requests incur a fee.
The status of the request may be seen in Tamcat in real time.
If the requested item has already become available at the Main Library, it can be cancelled by notifying the Library, e.g., by e-mail at tayk.lainaus@uta.fi or by phone at 040-190 9696. If the requested item has become available in another branch library, it can be cancelled by contacting the respective branch. Items not picked-up carry a fee.
Before the item becomes available, it can be cancelled in Tamcat.
Items, including overnight and weekend loans, can be returned using the self-service return-machine. The return-machine is located on the first floor.
When the library is closed, books may be left in the book-return bin at one's own risk. The bin is located on Kalevantie by the main entrance to Linna. Books in the return-bin are handled in Tamcat as if they were returned the previous working day.
The Library sends two overdue notices for overdue items. The notices are not sent during weekends or weekday-holidays; e.g., if the due date falls on Friday, the notice will be sent the following Monday.
Books and other items may also be returned by mail. The patron is responsible for items up until they arrive in the Library. When mailing, it is advisable to send items registered.
There are charges on overdue items. The overdue charges will be incurred immediately after the due date, if the customer has not returned or renewed the items in time. Charges will show on the Patron-information page only after the items are renewed or returned. More detailed information can be found on the service fees list.
The Library sends a courtesy notice for the approaching due date for the textbook collection loans and the general collection loans. The courtesy notice is sent at least two days before the due date primarily by e-mail. The library’s circulation system is computer-based. Borrowing and reserving items requires a Tampere University Library card.
Library card can be obtained at any branch library. The first card is free, but there is a charge of three euros for replacements. Circulation-related charges can be found on the service fee list.

Loans have to be renewed on the due date at the latest or returned, preferably to the same branch library from where they were borrowed. A book-return bin is located at Tertio's entrance, and items may be left there when the Library is closed.

To renew items does not require taking them to Library. Patrons can renew their loans themselves through Tamcat either in Library or office or at home.

It is possible to reserve items that are presently unavailable. Requests can be left at circulation counter or made directly in Tamcat, see instructions.

Reading room copies of textbooks and master’s theses are loaned out for overnights or weekends. Overnight loans can be taken out one hour before closing time and over the weekend loans two hours before closing time.
Overnight or weekend loans are to be returned the following opening day by 11 am. If returned late, a charge of eight euros will be incurred. Overnight or weekend loans may be returned only to Tertio: at the circulation counter during opening hours or to the book-return bin (by Tertio entrance) when the library is closed.
Overnight or weekend loans cannot be reserved in Tamcat, but a separate list of them is compiled. Requests can also be made by phone. Reservations are accepted only for the running week and only one reservation may be placed for a book at a time.
