Civic Innovations and Digital Applications (CIDA)

The research project Civic Innovations and Digital Applications (CIDA) produces empirically tested information on the social and cultural effects of Manse Square (in Finnish Mansetori), a web community originated in the city of Tampere in Finland. Several civic innovations have emerged within the realm of Manse Square; as an example, Manse Media can be mentioned, introducing local news written by neighbourhood reporters in the Net. Simultaneously, new digital applications have been developed to support the innovations; for instance, a publishing system operating in the Linux environment. The essential goal of the CIDA project is to analyse and develop these novel forms of civic action emanated from Manse Square as well as to assess how different groups of people view the digital applications created to support the sense of communality. Moreover, the project will produce internationally comparable knowledge on the possibilities as well as on the limitations of web-mediated civic publicness. The research is carried out by Journalism Research and Development Centre, University of Tampere.
