Introduction
The philosophy courses are mainly
offered only in Finnish. There are occasional lectures or lecture series by
visitors that are given in English. Information about these can be found on the
philosophy bulletin board and online. However, you can study philosophy at the
University of Tampere by taking book exams and writing essays.
Most of the study modules can be
taken by reading English books. In intermediate and advanced studies
you can write essays, but the subject and length of the essay must always be
agreed with the professor concerned. The staff will be happy to answer any
questions concerning studies in philosophy.
The discipline of Philosophy has been joined with the discipline of History in the 1st January 2008 forming the Department of History and Philosophy. Rooms of the teachers of philosophy are now located in the Pinni B building, 4th floor (visiting address is still Kanslerinrinne 1).
During the semesters, the consultation hours are on Wednesday for all teachers. Teachers may be, however, available for consultation at other times as well. Some useful telephone numbers: 3551 7275 (professor), 3551 7276 (professor), 3551 7278 (lecturer), and 3551 7575 (research assistant).
Under the "Studies" -link you'll find the courses lectured in English.
