The Department of History is one of the leading institutions for historical research in Finland. Our achievements in teaching are significant: the Ministry of Education has chosen the department as the national centre of excellence twice in a row (between 2001 and 2006).
In research and teaching we have focused on the European Middle Ages, Social and Urban History in the Age of Industrialization, and North American Studies. Furthermore, the Department has recently expanded its research activities in Roman History and Classical Heritage and the History of the Baltic Sea Regions during the early modern period (1400-1800). As of 2007 the Department is hosting a research project on the history and evolution of Transatlantic Relations (as part of the Academy of Finland's FiDiPro-initiative).
The Head of the Department is Professor Christian Krötzl (+358 3 3551 8335). Regarding administrative issues you are kindly asked to contact the Department Administration Secretary Ms Sari Pasto (+358 3 3551 6154) and Department Secretary Mr Risto Kunnari (+358 3 3551 6538). Exchange students are advised to contact the Coordinator Mr Touko Berry (+358 3 3551 7154).
