Teaching is closely linked to the latest research and, therefore, the themes of research are also well presented in our teaching. Teaching is offered predominantly in Finnish but some courses are also available in English. The Department has bilateral agreements with eight universities elsewhere in Europe under the Erasmus Programme.
We offer yearly a number of courses linked with two study programmes in English: North American Studies (NAM) and the Nordic Perspective on European History (HISE).
Moreover, the Department encourages individual work by students under the supervision of teachers. Most of the study units in our degree studies can be taken by book examinations and/or as written assignments in agreement of the teacher in charge.

The Nordic Perspective on European History (HISE 1-6) is a history programme specializing in the historical development of Northern Europe. The programme is especially designed for exchange students.
The programme offers an opportunity to understand European history via the prism of Northern Europe and enables the students to understand the specific historical and cultural features of Finland, Scandinavia and the Baltic region. It illuminates the importance of the centre - periphery interaction in European history, the role of Russia and how they have shaped Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea region.
The studies are to be completed primarily by taking book examinations and/or as written assignments. HISE 1 can alternatively be completed by doing a research paper in the Finnish History Seminar (follow the link for further information) (pdf). It is also possible to complete other parts of the Nordic Perspectives on European history by doing research papers in the Seminar.
The Structure of the program and teachers in charge
North American Studies (NAM)
The American Studies program was established in 1984 in cooperation with four faculties and
involving nine departments. The program is affiliated to the Department of History. For the first ten
years, teaching covered mostly U.S. topics. In the fall of 1994 the American Studies Program was
re-modelled into North American Studies Program with Canadian Studies also included in the curriculum.
A new era for the program has been inaugurated with the endowment by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation of the multidisciplinary Erkko Chair in North American Studies for five years beginning January 2007. The Erkko Chair is held by PhD Katri Sieberg.
The North American Studies Program explores the United States and Canada in various ways, approaching
both countries from historical, literary, social, cultural, political and from many other perspectives.
This interdisciplinary Program will take students on a journey through different eras, places, minds and dreams
that will familiarise them with North America.
The North American Studies Program is open to all University of Tampere students. It is useful especially
for those students who are planning to work or study in a global setting and an international environment.
Transatlantic relations is a part of the University's research strategy. The North American Studies Program has close contacts to some American and Canadian universities. North American
Studies specialists in the USA, Canada and Europe actively attend the international conferences on North American Studies that the University of Tampere arranges biannually. Contacts: Touko Berry
General information on the program.
Environmental History Group (IEHG)
Finland is often called the land of a thousand lakes; in fact there are, according to some calculations, 180,000 lakes in Finland. Therefore we are very proud of our natural heritage and we do live close to water and nature. The home town of IEHG is Tampere which has a long history of a largescale wood-processing and textile industry. Despite its smoky past and dozens of downtown factory chimneys, our city is today a dynamic centre of education, IT-technology, research and business, aiming to secure a sustainable future.
The IEH Group was established on a chilly winter afternoon in early 2001. The head of the group is Dr Petri S. Juuti. Other board members are Agata Depka, Harri Mäki, Riikka Rajala and Viktor Pal. Their aim is to research and promote different subdisciplines of environmental history. Contacts: Petri S. Juuti
