Tampere Graduate Centre for Social Sciences (TAMCESS) is a cooperative unit for postgraduate (Ph.D. level) education, formed to serve the departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Tampere. The functions of TAMCESS include organising doctoral courses, contributing to the development of joint theoretical and methodological postgraduate education in the Faculty, securing cooperation between different graduate schools, and providing various information services and internationalisation opportunities for postgraduate students and their departments. The International School of Social Sciences coordinates the activities of TAMCESS. The director of TAMCESS is professor Pertti Alasuutari. Professor Alasuutari is on leave of absence until 31.12.2013. The responsibilities are taken care of by Professor Risto Kunelius. The research activity of the Faculty of Social Sciences focuses on people's everyday life, on the central institutions of society, and on how activity and its structural determinants affect one another. The global system and transnational processes of change It is characteristic of the research at the faculty of Social Sciences to approach topics listed above from the viewpoint of cultural studies, social constructionism, or theory of action. On the other hand, in many investigations there is a particular interest in social systems and institutions, often approached from an international comparative perspective. Social interaction and behavioral research, social theory and history of ideas are also among the topics studied in the Faculty. |
